As part of their awareness and legal assistance project in defense of the vulnerability of women detainees in the prison against human rights violations, the international network of women lawyers exchanged on March 5 with the women detainees at the Klessoum prison. The objective is to understand the reality that these women live in and find a solution with the relevant ministry on the issue of freedom and the situations that these women on the other side of the wall are experiencing.

“Freedom is the principle. We consider ourselves a country of law, the women we met are not languishing due to lack of resources but due to lack of respect for the procedure. If there are no means, we should not detain someone here. I understand that the Chadian state has the means, which is why these men and women are remanded in custody. Now, the procedure must be respected. Most of these prisoners are detainees. Those who have been in prison since 2015, 2019, 2020…”, denounces Me Koulmem Nadjiro, shocked.

These detainees demand justice and freedom. “Please, we want judgment. The children are innocent. It is the difficult situation that brought us here with the children. We ask the President to see our case and grant us clemency,” a voice in the crowd demands.

They also ask for the creation of an association to help the children because for them, these children are innocent and no child goes to prison with a police report. “We are Chadians, not foreigners. Our children have the right to care, freedom, and to live happily and fulfilled, but why do our children die here without medical follow-up?” This is how they mentioned the situation of a child who passed away yesterday due to a lack of medical supplies.

There are a total of 57 women, including detainees and convicts. “We want our partners to understand this situation. There are underage girls here. We met adult women, detained for more than 5 years without trial, without a court order, who are here. We need there to be a change. A child died here yesterday. We saw the mother of the child and we all cried. There needs to be an acceleration of the cases, there needs to be diligence so that these women know their fate,” the network of women lawyers demands.
