More than 3.4 million people in Chad are in urgent need of a humanitarian response. This is a result of the massive influx of refugees fleeing the war in Sudan and “underfunding,” according to Action Against Hunger (Acf).
According to a statement from the NGO, 3.4 million people are currently in a critical situation of food insecurity in Chad. “The host provinces in Eastern Chad are among the most vulnerable areas of the country with limited access to basic services, and the arrival of refugees dramatically exacerbates the needs,” Acf reports.
Action Against Hunger also highlights “the number of severe acute malnutrition cases expected between October 2023 and September 2024, which is estimated to reach 480,000 children,” an increase of 15%. Henri-Noël Tatangang, Acf’s director for Chad, states that it is urgent for donors to ensure sustainable funding for the humanitarian response, noting that the current funding for the response plan is only “4.5%.”
The NGO also fears a deterioration of the humanitarian situation with “the onset of the rainy season and the lean period,” which “will increase needs and at the same time make access to vulnerable populations much more complex across the entire territory.”
