The Minister of Finance, Budget, and Public Accounts, Tahir Hamid Nguilin, presided over the signing ceremony of a subsidy agreement for agricultural inputs between the Chadian government, Coton Tchad, and cotton farmers on March 18, 2024 at the ministry’s premises.
Valued at over 16 billion CFA francs, this subsidy agreement signed between the Chadian government, Coton Tchad, and cotton farmers aims to boost cotton production in order to restore its former glory.
According to the Secretary-General of CotonTchad, Ibrahim Maloum, the signing of this subsidy agreement for agricultural inputs will boost cotton production because without inputs, production decreases and overall yield decreases.
For the president of the National Union of Cotton Farmers, Mbontar Ndouko, if Coton Tchad resumes its pace, there will be no influx of young people to the city because currently, 3 million people in the population rely on cotton. “The government needs to help us through the Ministry of Finance and Budget and we will help Chad regain its former glory,” he said before encouraging the Olam group to import agricultural inputs.
This subsidy of over 16 billion CFA francs granted by the government aims to boost cotton production and directly or indirectly support 3.5 million Chadians, as stated by the Minister of Finance, Budget, and Public Accounts, Tahir Hamid Nguilin. “Production must increase because the subsidy has increased from 3 billion to a significant amount,” he concluded.
