At the Palace of Democracy, National Councillors examined and adopted on Monday, March 18, 2024, a proposal for a special resolution in support of the Transition President in response to the recent violent events on February 27 and 28 that shook N’Djamena. According to the initiator of the resolution, Councillor Ali Kouloutou Tchaimi, this aims to strengthen the authority of the State.
According to the explanatory statement, N’Djamena has recently experienced unusual violence, marked by attacks on the seats of the Republic’s Institutions, notably the Supreme Court and the National Security Agency (ANSE), as well as the homes of public figures. “The hidden objective of these perpetrators is to undermine the authority of the State, disrupt the smooth running of the election calendar published by the National Election Management Agency (ANGE), and destabilize the Republic’s Institutions,” asserted Councillor Ali Kouloutou Tchaimi.
For him, peace and security, acquired at a heavy cost, cannot be called into question to satisfy selfish interests. “The transition President and his Government, consistent in transparently managing any situation, have opened an investigation to shed light on these events,” informed the Councillor.
After discussing the role played by others in calming tensions, Ali Kouloutou Tchaimi stated that he urged the Government to bring the perpetrators before the competent courts, in accordance with the current legal provisions in Chad. “It is important for the national representation to adopt a resolution in support of the Transition President, for all measures taken to strengthen the authority of the State,” he emphasized.
During the discussions, some National Councillors denounced the injustice towards the victims of the events that the capital experienced. “What happened on February 27 and 28 was the death of Chadians. We all know in what circumstances, in what conditions the massacre occurred, it is brutality that we as Chadians never accept. If it is the highest authority that allows itself to shoot at close range and eliminate citizens for whatever reason, when there is justice, we really need to come back to our senses,” declared National Councillor Rakhis Ahmat Saleh. “If you want to help the Transition President, try to appease hearts instead, there should be some regret about what happened. We must acknowledge that we played badly,” he added.
Although some councillors expressed reservations, the special resolution in support of the Transition President was adopted with 103 votes in favor, 3 votes against, and 1 abstention.
