Saomédia organized a journalist training workshop from April 12 to 13, 2024, under the theme “the social responsibility of the journalist during the electoral period”.
For 2 days, participants discussed the legal and institutional framework, the social responsibility of the journalist during the electoral period.
According to the trainer Touroumbaye Geoffroy, in terms of legal and institutional aspects, the institutions involved in the election process such as the National Election Management Agency (Ange), the Constitutional Council, and the High Authority of Media and Audiovisual (Hama) have specific roles.
Trainer Laoro Gondjé addressed journalists on their social responsibilities in the exercise of their functions. “A good journalist should not be malicious or corrupt, they should not disseminate defamatory or derogatory information during this electoral campaign,” he emphasized.
According to him, the journalist should effectively inform, disseminate information with a known origin. They should be objective, independent, neutral in information processing, impartial, and honest. “It is prohibited to use dishonest means to obtain information, avoid plagiarism and not to pay or receive money to disseminate information,” noted Laoro Gondjé.
