Former workers of the company Garantie, under contract with ESSO in Komé, held a press conference on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at the Chagoua FDAR school in N’Djamena. They denounce the tactics of Garantie aimed at delaying the implementation of a court decision in their favor dating back to 2019.
In 2007, these former workers had filed a complaint with the labor inspection to claim the points not taken into account in their salary on the oil site. This step ultimately led to an irrevocable condemnation of Garantie to pay an amount of four billion five hundred sixty-five million three hundred four thousand six hundred sixty francs (4,565,304,660 FCFA) to 1019 former workers in 2019.
Despite this court decision in their favor, the former workers claim that Garantie is using its political influence to prevent the execution of the decision. “The company’s leaders use their political position to prevent the bailiff from executing the decision. All attempts made by the bailiff are challenged for fallacious reasons and systematically referred back to Garantie,” said Ngardoum Sosthène, president of the former workers.
In light of this situation, the former workers call on the highest authorities, especially the Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice, to personally intervene in this matter. “This would only be fair, as we mourn over a hundred deaths among our ranks, leaving behind orphans and widows in distress,” the president called.
Moreover, the former workers encourage their former colleagues to remain mobilized for possible large-scale actions if no measures are taken to enforce their rights.
