The driver of a Mitsubishi was tragically killed when a cement mixer truck crashed into his vehicle at the Nkumba University traffic light along the Entebbe-Kampala expressway. The incident occurred on April 17, and the victim was identified as Raphael Okiot, a court advocate and husband of Kyenjojo Grade I Magistrate, Ms Faith Irene Kwagala.

According to Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura, the cement mixer truck failed to brake as it approached the traffic lights, resulting in the fatal collision. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck lost control, hit the barriers in the middle of the road, and fell onto the Mitsubishi RVR UBQ 371P, instantly killing the driver, Raphael Okiot.

The wreckage was later cleared from the road by security forces with the assistance of a crane truck. Both vehicles were taken to the Entebbe Main Police station, where the body of the deceased was recovered from the Mitsubishi. Mr. Kananura confirmed that the driver’s body had been removed from the vehicle.

Councilor Najid Huzaifa, who witnessed the accident, expressed concern about the safety of the road, labeling it a “death trap.” He mentioned that accidents are a common occurrence in the area, especially when vehicles fail to stop at the traffic lights. Calls were made for Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to install warning signs before the traffic lights to alert drivers and prevent further tragedies.

John Kasimbazi, the managing Director of Rock Zone Hotel near the crash scene, echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for improved road safety measures. He emphasized the importance of proactive measures to prevent accidents and save lives in the future.

The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers on the road and the importance of adhering to traffic regulations. It also highlights the need for authorities to address road safety issues and implement measures to protect motorists and pedestrians. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Raphael Okiot during this difficult time. Let us all prioritize safety and vigilance while on the road to prevent such heartbreaking incidents from reoccurring in the future.
