The Catholic Church in Uganda has expressed deep concerns regarding the escalating issues of corruption, divorce, human rights violations, and sexual misconduct within both believers and non-believers in the country. In a recent Easter message delivered at the Nsambya Catholic Secretariat, Bishop Anthony Zziwa, who serves as the chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, highlighted the disturbing trend of individuals in positions of authority embezzling public funds, thereby jeopardizing essential services like education and healthcare.

Bishop Zziwa questioned the extent to which the principles of love for God and neighbor are upheld in society, pointing out the prevalent societal evils that contradict the core values of resurrection and the national constitution. He emphasized the need for a fundamental shift in behavior and attitudes to uphold the common good and promote values that foster unity and integrity.

Of particular concern to the Catholic Church in Uganda is the growing xenophobia fueled by injustices and discrimination, exacerbated by corrupt practices and violations of human rights. This has widened the gap between the affluent and the marginalized, leading to societal tensions and inequalities that threaten social cohesion. Bishop Zziwa underscored the detrimental impact of the current socio-economic challenges faced by the vulnerable population, including the high cost of living, lack of market access for agricultural products, and environmental factors like climate change affecting agricultural productivity.

The bishop lamented the creation of a class divide perpetuated by those siphoning public resources, leaving the majority trapped in poverty and disenfranchisement. He warned that unless there is a collective effort to address these systemic issues, Uganda risks descending into a cycle of retribution targeting specific socio-economic groups.

In light of these pressing challenges, Bishop Zziwa called upon individuals to renounce unethical practices and embrace values of peace, reconciliation, honesty, and respect for human rights. He stressed the importance of upholding the dignity of every individual and working towards a more just and equitable society for all.

The Catholic Church’s stance on these critical issues reflects its commitment to promoting social justice, ethical governance, and the protection of human rights in Uganda. By speaking out against corruption, injustice, and discrimination, the Church seeks to inspire positive change and foster a more inclusive and compassionate society for all its members. As the faithful reflect on the message delivered by Bishop Zziwa this Easter, they are encouraged to examine their own actions and choices, striving to embody the values of love, integrity, and solidarity in their daily lives.
