The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rui Figueiredo Soares, said today that the country will soon open an Embassy in London, United Kingdom, the main market for tourists visiting the archipelago.

“We will open [an Embassy in London] soon,” said the Cape Verdean foreign affairs chief to Lusa news agency, on the sidelines of the 3rd Annual Foreign Policy Conference (CAPE), taking place in Praia over the next three days.

The Minister stated that the opening of the Embassy in London will allow the country to participate in international forums and seek partnerships on major climate threats.

“And the United Kingdom is clearly one of them,” he emphasized.

At the opening of CAPE, the Minister of State for Development and Africa of the United Kingdom, Andrew Mitchell, made a recorded video conference intervention, expressing the desire to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

In January, the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, enacted the creation of an Embassy in the United Kingdom.

In July 2017, just over a year after taking office, Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva acknowledged the need to enhance diplomatic action with the European country.

The Prime Minister stated that they intended to carry out “a very strong institutional marketing campaign in the United Kingdom, with the participation of government members, as well as chambers of commerce and tourism.”

“We need to assert ourselves more and more in the United Kingdom,” emphasized the Prime Minister at the time.

The United Kingdom is the main market for tourists visiting Cape Verde (36.6% last year).
