Cabo Verde recorded 129,370 sea turtle nests in 2023, almost double the 68,488 counted in 2022, the coordinator of the Environmental Conservation Network (Taola+) told Lusa today.

According to Leno dos Passos, the overall data from the sea turtle protection campaign indicated that in 2023 there was an “increase in nests” compared to 2022, with an additional 60,882 nests.

The island of Boa Vista had the highest number of nests, with 75,998, followed by Sal with 25,485, and Maio with 14,995.

These three islands host 95% of the nesting that occurs in the archipelago, while Santiago and the rest of the islands represent 5%.

The sea turtle nesting season, when the species migrates to the archipelago’s beaches to make their nests, takes place from June to November.

Taola+ is an environmental conservation network in Cape Verde that brings together non-governmental organizations involved in environmental protection and conservation work.

Established in 2009, it initially focused solely on turtle protection, but in 2022 it was transformed into Taola+ to encompass all aspects of environmental conservation, involving 20 members from various organizations.
