Cape Verde received 25% more external aid in the form of donations in 2023 compared to the previous year, amounting to around five billion escudos, according to statistics from the central bank.

The data released by the Lusa agency includes values from 2015, and the amount for 2023 is the third lowest – only in 2016 and 2022 did Cape Verde receive lower amounts of donations.

In 2023, the origin of the donations remained the same as the previous year: about two-thirds come from partner Governments, and almost one-third from supranational organizations, with less than 7% coming from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and private institutions.

Regarding the type of donations, the majority (75%) continue to be made in foreign currency, with the remaining donations being in goods, mostly equipment – food aid represents only 4% of the total donations to the country in 2023.

The Government announced at the end of 2023 that the country must follow a trend of reducing donations to finance the State Budget, expecting them to represent about 5% of the approximately 86 billion escudos of the 2024 State Budget.
