Cabo Verde is the guest country at the international Blue Leaders meeting, dedicated to the protection of the oceans, taking place today in Brussels, showcasing the work done by the country in the field of the blue economy.
The Minister of the Sea, Abraão Vicente, is attending the event to discuss the Cabo Verdean experience in the blue economy – activities related to the oceans, from fishing to tourism, among others – and its relationship with sustainability principles.
The Blue Leaders organization includes 24 countries – including Portugal, the only Lusophone country – who call for urgent actions to save the global ocean from the climate crisis, overfishing, pollution, and other threats.
The group was born during the 2021 Climate Summit (COP26), when the constituent countries signed a declaration with two main principles: to establish “a new global goal to protect at least 30% of the global ocean by 2030” and to “quickly conclude a new United Nations treaty to conserve and protect biodiversity in the ocean beyond national jurisdiction.”
Today’s meeting is part of the program of the Belgian presidency of the European Council.
The meeting program includes panel discussions with representatives from governments and international organizations in the fields of science and youth.
One of the main documents in focus will be the United Nations Treaty on Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Treaty or High Seas Treaty) and the link between the ocean and climate.
As an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, almost the entire territory of Cabo Verde is made up of sea, to which the country – 10 islands, nine inhabited – is connected for almost all areas of economic and social activity.
