The Minister of Foreign Affairs said today in parliament that, between 2021 and 2023, the country paid 400 million escudos in statutory contributions to international organizations.
“In 2021/2023, contributions amounting to 400 million escudos were paid,” said Rui Figueiredo Soares, in response to a question from the president of UCID, João Santos Luís, during the first plenary session of April.
For this year, the head of diplomacy said that there is a budget of around 420 million escudos to continue paying off the debt to international organizations, the total value of which he did not disclose.
The minister also stated that the country is “making significant efforts to ensure that statutory contributions are up to date in various international organizations and to fulfill commitments.”
In October 2023, Rui Figueiredo Soares said that the Government would seek partnerships this year to stop accumulating a debt to the Economic Community of West African States that already exceeds the equivalent of 28 million euros.
In addition to ECOWAS, Cabo Verde is a member of organizations such as the African Union (AU) and the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP).
