The Minister of State and National Defense stated today, on the island of Sal, that Cape Verde is a small country in terms of size, but with the ambition to positively influence and become a reference in terms of governance.
Janine Lélis made these remarks early this Monday afternoon, in a review of the first period of the international conference on “Freedom, democracy and good governance,” which is taking place over two days in the city of Santa Maria.
According to the government official, all the interventions were in line with the underlying strategies of the conference, which is to think about democracy, freedom, and good governance from the perspective of Cape Verde.
“It is an international conference that brings international experts and organizations related to democratic elections to reflect on and deepen democracy and freedom, making everyone understand that they have a responsibility to contribute to the consolidation of democracy,” she emphasized.
“The goal is for us to make a positive influence in the face of the challenges that democracy is currently experiencing, with the conviction that we are all contributing to a process of greater inclusion development,” she added.
The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs also highlighted that Cape Verde is a “well-regarded” country at various levels of governance, and it is in this sense that she speaks of a positive influence.
Janine Lélis pointed out that this conference includes scientists, politicians, university professors, and individuals with added value in terms of democracy, bringing a different perspective to understand the various dimensions of the issues and address them.
“The purpose is noble, as the aim is to truly contribute to better democracy, more freedom, and better governance, in the name of transparency and the happiness of nations,” she said.
In conclusion, the minister stressed that it is legitimate to want to provide an international perspective to contribute to the international scene with what is the result of a discussion and reflection made in Cape Verde.
On the first day of the international conference, a second panel was discussed in the afternoon, entitled “Democracy and religious freedom.”
The panel had as speakers the pastor and chaplain Rose Claire, political scientist and professor of public management at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, Claudio Couto, and the bishop of the Diocese of Mindelo, Ildo Fortes, moderated by the president of the NGO Platform, Jacinto Santos.
