BAMENDA, Cameroon – Amidst tension and cautiousness, thousands of youth gathered in Bamenda on February 11th to celebrate National Youth Day. The Commercial Avenue was bustling with activity, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere. However, the rest of the city remained quiet as residents were wary of separatist attacks.

“It’s refreshing to see so many young people here,” remarked a resident, observing the large crowd under tight security.

The turnout was remarkable, with students from various regions confidently parading in their colorful uniforms. The event featured captivating cultural performances and speeches from government officials emphasizing the importance of youth involvement in shaping Cameroon’s future.

However, the festivities were overshadowed by fear. “It was frightening to come out,” confessed Agnes, a 17-year-old, holding her friend’s hand tightly. “The Ambazonian separatists declared a lockdown and warned of potential attacks on those who participated.”

Her fear resonated with many. The city remained deserted, with closed shops and empty streets. “It’s unfortunate,” lamented shopkeeper Simon Tchinda. “Today should be a day of joy, celebrating the vibrancy of our youth, instead of dwelling on fear.”

The contrasting scenes within and outside the ceremonial grounds highlighted the complex reality of life in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions. Despite efforts to maintain a facade of normalcy, underlying tensions and potential for violence cannot be ignored.

“We want peace and a voice in shaping our future,” said Michael, a university student participating in the celebrations. “Events like this are just part of the picture. We need genuine dialogue and solutions addressing the root causes of the conflict.”

As the celebrations ended, the young attendees dispersed, carrying a sense of hope and unity. However, concerns about the region’s future and the well-being of its younger generation lingered. Only time will tell whether the sounds of joy can outweigh the murmurs of fear, creating possibilities for a more promising future for Bamenda’s youth. (Contributed by Kate Bih)
