Two students have been arrested in Yaounde, Cameroon’s capital, for their alleged involvement in armed robberies targeting mobile money kiosk operators, as announced by the Cameroon National Gendarmerie in Nkolbisson on March 16.
The two suspects, aged 17 and 26, are accused of using firearms to commit robberies at kiosks in the Nkolbisson neighborhood. Following complaints from kiosk operators, a manhunt was initiated on March 14, leading to the apprehension of the suspects in the Caramba area of the Nkolbisson District.
The Gendarmerie revealed that the suspects were caught in the act of preparing for another robbery and seized a MAB BREVET-SDGD model D automatic pistol along with an empty magazine during the arrest.
One of the suspects is also believed to be responsible for a robbery that occurred on December 10, 2023, at an Orange Money kiosk in Caramba, where an amount of 5 million FCFA was stolen.
These two individuals will be prosecuted in court, and the Gendarmerie is committed to continuing their investigation in order to capture any other accomplices involved in these criminal activities.
The arrest of these students highlights the concerning increase in crime rates in Yaounde, which has experienced a notable surge in criminal activities in recent years.
