Two Cameroonian government Ministers have visited victims and areas devastated by heavy rains that led to the death of a Master’s student and caused damage to numerous buildings and vehicles on Friday, March 8.
On Monday morning, the Ministers of Secondary Education, Prof. Nalova Lyonga, and of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, conveyed the condolences of the President to Beyala Sylvain’s family, the student who tragically lost his life in the disaster.
They also provided support and reassurance to many individuals whose homes were affected by the rains.
The Ministers conducted an assessment of homes, offices, and schools that were significantly impacted by the rainfall.
“He passed away at his residence after being struck by furniture during the intense rainfalls that occurred last Friday, March 8,” a statement from MINAT read.
Some of the locations that suffered damages include GBHS Etoug Ebe, GBPHS Yaounde, Lycée General LeClerc, and the Efulan Divisional Officer’s office, among others.
At GBHS Etoub Ebe, MINAT reported that the storm had destroyed the roofs of four buildings, affecting 23 classrooms with 10 of them being non-functional on Monday, impacting the education of more than 2,000 students.
“The interministerial delegation provided support to the Principals and students of the affected schools and offered recommendations for the reconstruction of damaged structures and accommodation for the students,” a joint statement from the two Ministries stated.
Minister Atanga Nji of MINAT assured individuals whose homes were demolished that they would be reconstructed following the government’s disaster management protocol.
The Ministers were accompanied on their visit by the Governor of the Center Region, Naseri Paul Bea, and several high-ranking officials from both Ministries.
