The Embassies of the United States, United Kingdom and France in Cameroon have strongly condemned the recent bomb attack in Nkambe, North West, which resulted in the death of at least one person and left dozens injured. The attack took place on February 11, during the celebration of National Youth Day, with most of the victims being women and school children.
The US Embassy expressed that there is no justification for such an attack on civilians, especially children. They extended their condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to all those injured. The British Embassy also emphasized that civilians should never be targeted in the conflict in the English-speaking Regions, and they expressed solidarity with the victims and their families. The French Embassy also condemned the attack and offered words of condolence to the victims and their loved ones.
Both government forces and Ambazonia separatist fighters have been accused of gross abuses against civilians since the armed conflict began in 2017. The attack in Nkambe is just one of several orchestrated by separatists to deter people from participating in official ceremonies.
The three embassies’ strong condemnation of the attack highlights the severity and urgency of the situation in Cameroon’s English-speaking Regions. The ongoing conflict continues to take a heavy toll on civilians, and the international community is called upon to support efforts to bring about peace and stability in the region.
