At the end of the first elective general assembly that took place on April 9, 2024, the former head of Gicam was designated as the head of Gecam (Fusion Gicam-Ecam).

The Groupement des entreprises du Cameroun (Gecam) is the new entity resulting from the merger of Gicam and Ecam. The election of its first board took place on April 9, 2024. “The members of Gecam were informed of the approval, on January 8, 2024, by the transitional board of directors, of the schedule for the election of the first Gecam board. This electoral period extends from January 9 to April 9, 2024, the date of the elective general assembly,” wrote Aline Valérie Mbono, executive director of Gecam, in January 2024.

Having taken over the leadership of the largest employers’ organization in Cameroon (Gicam) in 2017 for two non-renewable terms, the 58-year-old businessman remains in that position. It is not surprising that he will once again lead the Cameroonian employers’ association, as only one list had submitted a candidacy and Tawamba was at the head of it. The list presented by Celestin Tawamba includes the CEO of Société anonyme des boissons du Cameroun (Sabc), Stéphane Descazeaud. The current CEO of MTN Cameroon, a leading mobile phone company in Cameroon, Zambian Mitwa Ng’ambi, also holds a prominent position on the list. Similarly, Perrial Jean Nyodog, vice president of the former Ecam, who led the company Tradex for years before joining the board of directors of another petroleum products distributor, Gulfin S.A., is also included.

Celestin Tawamba is now the very first president of Gecam (merger of Gicam and Ecam), confirming the claims of his opponents, who suspected him of wanting to remain at the helm of the Cameroonian employers’ association.
