Cameroon is mourning the loss of a pioneering legal luminary, Barrister Mrs. Weledji Mariam, affectionately known as Mami Weledji, who passed away this morning in Limbe. She was the first Cameroonian woman lawyer to be called to the Cameroon Bar, leaving a lasting impact on the nation’s legal landscape.

Born on December 13, 1937, in Bamenda, Mami Weledji’s journey to becoming a legal icon began with her education at Convent School Soppo Buea and Holy Rosary College, Enugu. She excelled academically, obtaining certificates in O.L and A.L. She furthered her studies at prestigious institutions abroad, including the University of Oxford and Holborn College of Law in London, where she received her L.L.B with 2nd Class Honors.

In October 1968, Mami Weledji became a Barrister-at-Law and an Honorable member of the Grays Inn. She returned to Cameroon and founded the Ngede Law Firm in Limbe, where she served as the head until her passing. She also made an impact on the international stage, serving as the President of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Cameroon.

Beyond her legal career, Mami Weledji was a successful businesswoman and real estate investor, with the HOLIDAY INN RESORT in Limbe being one of her notable investments. She was also a prominent gender activist, advocating for women’s rights and inspiring future female lawyers and activists.

As a mother of five sons and one daughter, Mami Weledji’s family reflects her strength, resilience, and commitment to excellence. Her legacy as a trailblazing legal figure will continue to inspire generations of legal professionals and advocates for gender equality in Cameroon and beyond.

As Cameroon says goodbye to this remarkable woman, may the soul of Barrister Mrs. Weledji Mariam rest in peace.
