On the morning of Tuesday, March 26, 2024, wreaths of flowers were laid outside the walls of the Russian embassy in Yaoundé.
A prompt and efficient mobilization. A dozen people, all dressed in black, holding flower wreaths, gathered in front of the external esplanade of the Russian embassy in Cameroon on this Tuesday morning. They came to offer their condolences to Russia.
On Friday, March 22, 2024, a bombing in Moscow, Russia, caused at least 137 deaths and 187 injuries. Among the victims of the attack at Crocus City Hall were children aged 7 to 10. According to the Russian news agency Tass, over 5,000 people were evacuated from the burning building.
To solemnly honor the memory of these victims, the organization called the “Community of Russophiles and Russophones of Cameroon” (C2R-Cameroon) is showing solidarity by laying symbolic flowers in front of the embassy walls in Yaoundé. This gesture is explained by the fact that “Russia is a people who have the same vision as Cameroon, in terms of economy and nationalism,” said Mbida Ndoumbe, spokesperson for the organization, at the end of the event.
The day before, the embassy was formally notified of this demonstration. A correspondence from the national directorate of the Community of Russophiles and Russophones of Cameroon to His Excellency Georgy Todua, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Cameroon, reads: “In this sad circumstance, we extend our deepest condolences and wishes for a speedy recovery to President Vladimir Putin and the Russian people.” The document is signed by Robert Mbarga, president of the directorate.
The association “Community of Russophiles and Russophones of Cameroon” (C2R-Cameroon) has been in existence for a year. Its mission is to support projects that promote friendship between Cameroon and Russia. Its objectives include promoting Russian and African languages and cultures, developing tourism and exchanges between Russia and Cameroon, fostering academic and technological exchanges between the two countries, strengthening friendship and cultural ties between Russian and African peoples, and promoting economic development.
All these aspects justify the solidarity and sympathy shown by C2R-Cameroon to the Russian people living in the country of President Paul Biya, as well as to those who remain in their homeland.
