If several opposition political parties say they are in favor of an opposition coalition, they say they do not understand the approach of the deputy Jean Michel Nintcheu who wants to impose a candidate on them.
There is no doubt that the idea of a coalition around a single candidacy for Maurice Kamto is not welcome among certain political parties in the opposition. The option proposed by the Patriotic Alliance for Change (APC) of Deputy Jean Michel Nintcheu has been flatly rejected by some opposition leaders.
“The idea of an opposition coalition in view of the upcoming presidential election is certainly good, but we cannot afford to choose a single opposition candidate from a political party that unfortunately cannot invest a candidate in the presidential election. In our opinion, only the leaders of political parties with elected officials should be able to run for the single opposition candidacy,” said Denis Emilien Atangana, national president of the FDC and Municipal Councilor.
Professor Olivier Bile chose a different approach, presenting to the different opposition forces his initiative for an Alliance for Political Transition (ATP) in order to reflect on the terms of a single candidacy.
In turn, the president of the PCRN, Cabral LIBI, who had been officially approached by the honorable Jean Michel Nintcheu regarding a coalition behind Maurice Kamto, set conditions before joining a coalition. In his statement of February 12, Cabral Libii wrote: “At the end of the period of deep consultation of our political base regarding the adherence or not of our political party to the Alliance for which you are in charge of coordination, it is my republican duty to inform you of the widely shared position of PCRN members, sympathizers, and elected officials:
– The Political Alliance for Change (APC) is an undoubtedly opportune initiative;
– Considering the state of degradation of our country and the opacity that has surrounded more than 40 years of exercise of power by a single ruling order, and in light of the lessons learned from the transitional situations in countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, or Gabon, it seems to us a priority, realistic and wise to anticipate by working for the advent through the vote, of a Refounding Civil Transition (TCR) of three (03) to five (05) years, responsible for evaluating the institutions and undertaking reforms, after which there will be, among other things, equal opportunities among future competitors for power;
– Rather than presenting a candidate outright, we must first agree on the main reforms to be made, and then find a “battleground” whose profile will be drawn up in concert by the political and civil organizations of the transition platform. PCRN members, sympathizers, and elected officials would unreservedly support the candidate of the MRC, if chosen within this framework;
– We find it judicious to explore the historical and structuring idea of political transition, articulated around the ARC-CNS (Alliance for the Reconstruction of Cameroon – National Sovereign Conference) of the early 1990s which, having served as a launching pad for the Union for Change, had inspired the commendable candidacy of the SDF Chairman Ni John FRU NDI in the 1992 presidential election, for an electoral performance never equalled since then;
– The transition platform should offer our compatriots a concerted approach to rebuilding the country, and not a political project specific to a person or a political party;
– It seems appropriate to develop, after consulting available social bodies, a Document of Politicial Transition Proposal (DOPTR);
– PCRN members, sympathizers, and elected officials are eager to discover the different members of the APC and engage in constructive discussions with them. If necessary, please contact the Vice-President of the PCRN in charge of monitoring national institutions and disputes.”
Before Cabral Libii, the UDC had characterized the approach of the honorable Jean Michel Nintcheu as a cavalier approach.
