The Diocese of Buea in Cameroon, the oldest Roman Catholic Diocese in the country, has kicked off its 75th-anniversary celebrations in preparation for next year’s commemoration of its establishment in 1950. The anniversary was officially launched on April 18 at the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral in Buea, with a special mass presided over by Bishop Michael Bibi. Established by Pope Pius XII on April 18, 1950, the Diocese of Buea holds the distinction of being the first diocese in Cameroon.
As the diocese marks its 75th year, Bishop Michael Bibi is leading the faithful in a year-long celebration of faith, unity, and progress. One of the highlights of the anniversary celebrations is a gathering of bishops from across Cameroon for their annual seminar, set to take place in Buea from January 4th to 11th, 2025. In addition, on January 5th, the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral will be consecrated as the Bishop Pius Awa Memorial Center, a significant milestone in the diocese’s history.
Throughout the year, celebrations will extend to the seven deaneries that make up the Diocese of Buea, bringing together congregations from various parishes to participate in the festive events. Special gatherings will also be held with apostolic prayer and action groups to promote spiritual unity and camaraderie among the faithful. The diocese also plans to collaborate with educational institutions and service organizations, emphasizing the integral role of faith in community life.
As part of the anniversary activities, construction projects at the pastoral center will be completed to enhance the diocese’s ability to effectively serve its members. Bishop Michael Bibi expressed confidence that the construction work at the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral would be finished by the end of December, both inside the church and in the basement. Additionally, the bishop’s residence construction, funded by the church and other donors, is expected to be completed by November.
Overall, the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Diocese of Buea promise to be a time of joy, reflection, spiritual growth, and community building. The diocese looks forward to a year filled with memorable events and meaningful connections with its members and the broader community.
