The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, has ordered the troops of the 3rd Division of the Nigerian Army and the Joint Task Force Operation Safe Haven to adopt a more aggressive posture and decisively eradicate the terrorists causing chaos in Plateau and neighboring states.
General Lagbaja gave this order on Saturday, January 27, 2024, when addressing the troops during an operational tour in Plateau, following a recent disturbance of peace in the Mangu local government area of Plateau State.
Informed about the security situation, the General Officer Commanding the 3rd Division and Commander of Operation Safe Haven, Major General Abdusalam Abubakar, acknowledged the complexity of the security dynamics on the Plateau due to its political, cultural, and economic context.
General Lagbaja inspected the weapons and ammunition recovered by the troops and commended them for not allowing the crisis to spread to other parts of the state.
He assured that he was convinced that the troops would be more resilient and would spare no effort to ensure the restoration of peace and tranquility on the Plateau and in other troubled regions of the country.
General Lagbaja therefore charged the troops to live up to the expectations of all peace-loving and law-abiding residents of the Plateau, emphasizing that trust is earned and the troops must do everything in their power to maintain the trust of the people they are charged with watching over and protecting.
“Our operations and activities must adhere to the rules of engagement and be free from emotions,” he emphasized.
In response, the Governor of Plateau State, Lawyer Caleb Mutfwang, revealed that he has never doubted the capacity of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to fulfill their constitutional mandate.
He specified that the civilian population has a role to play in strengthening security on the Plateau. “As a government, we know that we have the responsibility to motivate them. The recent breakdown was completely avoidable, and people must work harmoniously to regain peace and harmony,” Governor Mutfwang said.
