Two new T-129 ATAK helicopters and a Beechcraft King Air 360ER have entered into the order of battle of the Nigerian Air Force, which is conducting counter-insurgency operations, counter-terrorism operations, countering crude oil theft, and counter-kidnapping operations in Nigeria.
In a statement, the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, stated that the acquisition and introduction of these aircraft undoubtedly symbolize President Tinubu’s enduring commitment to the ideals of patriotism and investment in national security as well as a solemn commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s security.
“I am convinced that the deployment of the newly acquired aircraft will significantly enhance combat effectiveness in addressing contemporary security challenges, both at the national level and in the West African region,” said Nigerian Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima.
President Tinubu also reiterated his previous commitment to eradicating terrorism, insurgency, kidnappings, and other criminal activities that have paralyzed the country for years. While noting that substantial progress has been made in ongoing counter-terrorism efforts, he emphasized the need for a change in mindset, strategy, and tactics to address this threat.
In his address, the Honorable Minister of Defense, Dr. Badaru Abubakar, acknowledged the President’s sincerity in restoring peace in all regions of Nigeria. He also expressed gratitude to the President for his foresight, resilient leadership, and unwavering support for the Nigerian Armed Forces, despite the numerous challenges facing the nation.
The minister also reiterated the need to adhere to maintenance schedules and implement robust safety practices to ensure the sustainable operational readiness of the aircraft for the nation’s maximum benefit. He urged NAF personnel to align their individual and collective actions with the President’s vision, focusing on the pursuit of peace, stability, and rapid development.
The TAS also revealed that since the President’s tenure, the NAF has integrated 5 new aircraft into its fleet, including 2 Diamond 62 surveillance aircraft, 2 T-129 ATAK helicopters, and a King Air 360 ER. Emphasizing the importance of these acquisitions in line with the President’s commitment to national security, the CAS highlighted the NAF’s project to introduce 46 new aircraft of different types over the next 18 months. Furthermore, Air Marshal Abubakar assured Nigerians that, while the NAF is operationally engaged on all fronts, it will not rest until it brings the war to a favorable end to ensure the peace and stability that Nigerians deserve.
