The Groupement des entreprises du Cameroun (Gecam) is the new entity resulting from the merger of Gicam and Ecam. The election of its first board will take place on April 9, 2024. “The members of Gecam are informed of the approval, on January 8, 2024 by the transitional board of directors, of the schedule for the election of the first Gecam board. This electoral period extends from January 9 to April 9, 2024, the date of the elective general assembly,” wrote Aline Valérie Mbono, executive director of Gecam, in January 2024.

Having taken over the leadership of the major employers’ organization in Cameroon (Gicam) in 2017 for two non-renewable terms, the 58-year-old businessman still plans to stay for a duration that will undoubtedly be determined at the elective general assembly on April 9.

So we have reached April 9, the day when Célestin Tawamba will once again be elected (unless a miracle happens) as the head of the Cameroonian employers’ organization. Because only one list has put forward candidates, and Tawamba is at the head of that list. The list presented by Célestin Tawamba includes Stéphane Descazeaud, the CEO of the Société anonyme des boissons du Cameroun (Sabc). Mitwa Ng’ambi, the current CEO of MTN Cameroon, the leading mobile phone operator in Cameroon, from Zambia, is also prominently featured. As well as Perrial Jean Nyodog, vice president of the former Ecam, who led the Tradex company for years before joining the board of another petroleum products distributor, Gulfin S.A.

Célestin Tawamba will be the very first president of Gecam (the merger of Gicam and Ecam), confirming the claims of his opponents, who suspected him of wanting to remain at the helm of Cameroonian employers for an extended period of time.
