In a statement signed by Joseph Emmanuel Ateba, the national secretary for communication of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC), the party expresses outrage at the comments made by the brilliant journalist with the aim of tarnishing the image and reputation of Maurice Kamto through lies. The MRC also denounces irresponsible behavior and expresses concern about the path Cameroon is taking.
During an appearance on a program on Info TV, former journalist Henriette Ekwe made serious revelations about Maurice Kamto, the national president of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC). The party headed by Maurice Kamto denounces the “unacceptable remarks because they are a tissue of lies.”
Among the lies enumerated by the MRC are: “Mrs. Ekwe claims that the constitutional revision project was led by the Ministry of Justice. This is the first lie. This project was actually led by the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization.”
Furthermore, “Mrs. Ekwe mentions Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Justice, and Keeper of the Seals, Ahmadou Ali, of revered memory, and the Delegate Minister Maurice Kamto, as the two government members who defended this project before the Constitutional Laws Commission of the National Assembly. This is the second lie. It was actually the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization at the time, the Minister of State, Marafa Hamidou Yaya, who defended this project before the Laws Commission and in plenary on behalf of the Government.”
She also states “Honorable Jean Jacques Ekindi as a witness to the debates of the Constitutional Laws Commission. This is the third lie. In 2008, Honorable Jean Jacques Ekindi was the Secretary of the Finance Commission of the National Assembly, not a member or leader of the Constitutional Laws Commission. Therefore, not being a member of the Constitutional Laws Commission, he could not see or hear either the government members who actually appeared before this Commission, or those who never appeared, like Ministers Amadou Ali and Maurice Kamto, to defend the 2008 constitutional revision project.”
Without stepping back, “Mrs. Ekwe utters a fourth lie about the Electoral Code of 2012 by stating that it was written by Maurice Kamto. Electoral issues are part of the responsibilities of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, both when it had full powers for the organization of elections and under Onel, and today, under Elecam. Therefore, it is the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization that has drafted and steered the various electoral laws in Cameroon, including the current Electoral Code adopted in 2012. When Mrs. Ekwe claims that it was Maurice Kamto, Delegate Minister to the Minister of Justice, who wrote the current Electoral Code, it is another lie. Furthermore, in 2012, when the current Electoral Code was presented, defended, and voted on in Parliament, and then promulgated by the President of the Republic, Maurice Kamto was no longer a member of the Government, since November 2011.”
According to the MRC, “these are four lies in a few minutes of speaking. It is painful to see how dark our country has become. To see a personality like Mrs. Ekwe, who has reached a respectable age, that of dignity and useful public speech, lie in such a shameless manner is indicative of the moral decay of the Cameroonian political class. It is not with lies and hatred that we will build our country,” thinks Joseph Emmanuel Ateba, the signatory of the statement published on February 21, 2024.
He adds lamentably: “One can express their political disagreements with Maurice Kamto, and they have the right to do so without resorting to lies, which is an irresponsible and unworthy choice, especially when one has the background of Mrs. Ekwe.”
