The president of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon, Archbishop Andrew Nkea of Bamenda, did not hold back in his denouncement of the practice of homosexuality, while also encouraging Cameroonians to promote messages of peace.
The 49th plenary session of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon, which has been ongoing since April 9th, has been marked by poignant speeches from the bishops. Overall, the conference has already addressed the challenges and opportunities of the current year.
One of the highlights of this meeting was the opening speech delivered by Archbishop Andrew Nkea, the current president of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon. Archbishop of Bamenda, he delved into several crucial issues. He denounced the practice of homosexuality and rejected the blessing of homosexual couples, echoing a message previously delivered by the bishops of Cameroon in 2023, condemning Pope Francis’ idea of blessing homosexual couples.
Archbishop of Bamenda also denounced the rising prices of foodstuffs in Cameroon and the resulting precarious living conditions for many citizens. He called on political leaders to take concrete measures to ensure a future of peace and prosperity, especially in anticipation of the 2025 presidential elections. Archbishop Nkea also urged the media to play a positive role in society by using their platforms to promote peace and understanding.
“We are concerned about the lack of ethics in the media these days. In his message for the upcoming World Communications Day, Pope Francis invites us to responsible media use. He warns us against any drift,” he noted, strongly denouncing the promotion of hate speech, division, and the spread of fake news.
Furthermore, he advocated for responsible use of digital media, highlighting their ability to bring communities together and spread messages of hope and unity.
The work of the 49th Plenary Assembly of the bishops is taking place at the headquarters of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon (CENC) in Mvolyé, in the presence of Cardinal Robert Sarah, the Archbishop Emeritus of Guinea Conakry and former head of the pope’s charity office, who is on a friendly visit to the diocese of Obala.
