The Cameroonian government has officially increased taxi fares due to the rising cost of fuel. The new rates, effective immediately, have daytime fares rising from 300 CFA francs to 350 CFA francs, and nighttime fares (from 10 pm to 5 am) increasing from 350 CFA francs to 400 CFA francs.

In a government communique, the Minister of Trade, Mr. Luc Magloire MBARGA ATANGANA, announced the new rates, citing the need to harmonize urban transport by taxis. While this adjustment is intended to assist taxi drivers with higher fuel expenses, it has raised concerns among commuters, especially those facing financial difficulties.

Sarah Ngo, a market vendor in Douala, expressed her disapproval, stating that the increasing cost of living makes it challenging for many people. Joseph Ewane, a construction worker, mentioned that the hike in taxi fares will have a significant impact on his budget as his children rely on taxis to get to school. Gisele, a secretary in Bonanjo, voiced her worries about managing the increase with her already low salary. Another resident of Douala, Joseph, expressed frustration with the current situation in the country.

The concerns raised by the citizens shed light on the daily struggles experienced by many Cameroonians. While the government has introduced measures like free intercity transport for children under seven, there are lingering concerns about the impact of the new fares, especially in smaller towns where shorter trips are common.

Additionally, questions have been raised about the suitability of the new fares across Cameroon, with some suggesting that the prices may be more appropriate for larger cities like Douala and Yaounde, where journeys are longer. The recent salary increase for civil servants is unlikely to fully offset the rise in taxi fares, exacerbating the financial strain on many individuals.

The situation underscores the challenges faced by the people of Cameroon and highlights the need for sustainable solutions to address the economic difficulties they are encountering.
