It was a stunning display of sport and culture at the Molyko Onmisport Stadium in Buea on Friday, February 23.

The event featured cultural dances, libation ceremonies, a march past, and speeches, all leading up to the launch of the 29th edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, which officially starts on Saturday, February 24.

The theme for this year’s race is “Let’s give peace a chance.”

The event attracted a diverse crowd, with both young and old, women and men in attendance.

602 athletes from 11 countries, including Cameroon, will participate in the race, running up to the summit of the Chariots of Gods and back down to the finish line where the winner will be determined.

During the launch, the Cameroonian Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcise Mouele Kombi, assured the athletes and the public that necessary security measures have been put in place to ensure their safety.

The Mayor of Buea, David Mafany Namange, took the opportunity to showcase the hospitality of Buea Municipality to the visitors. He also appealed to the youth involved in armed conflict to lay down their weapons and embrace peace.

Furthermore, he encouraged them to not only partake in the race but also explore the local tourist attractions and cuisine.

The mayor also announced restrictions on roadside parking, citing security concerns following incidents involving explosives hidden in abandoned vehicles last year.

The President of the Cameroon Athletic Federation, Emmanuel Motombi, expressed gratitude to the local chief for ensuring the town was ready to host the race.

The event featured performances by different dance groups from various regions of Cameroon, delighting the spectators.

As the 29th edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope commences, it serves as a reminder of the unity that sports and culture can bring, promoting peace and harmony in the community.
