This structure will help prevent and manage incidents that may occur in this area considered to be at high risk.

On February 19, 2024, the Minister Delegate to the Presidency in charge of Defense, Beti Assomo Joseph, made a working visit to Douala where he signed a convention aimed at strengthening the partnership between the Ministry of Defense and Prometal Group, an iron processing plant located in the Bassa industrial zone of Douala.

This working visit to the MAGZI industrial zone of Douala was endorsed by the laying of the first stone for the construction of a Special Center for the National Firefighters Corps by Beti Assomo Joseph, which will be executed by the Prometal Group. The presence of a firefighter unit in this locality aims to respond to security threats, fires, and other consequences of the region’s increasing industrialization.

The center will indeed be built on an area of 3000 square meters. It will consist of an administrative building, a cafeteria, meeting rooms, about twenty housing units for firefighters, etc. This investment is estimated at around 1 billion CFA francs according to the CEO of the Prometal Group, Hayssam El Jammal.

It will allow for proactive management of incidents. “Year after year, our country records numerous civil protection crises: floods, road accidents, landslides, natural and industrial disasters, building collapses, fires, etc. The national fire service is the major joint military training dedicated to civil protection,” said Minister Joseph Beti Assomo.

For his part, the CEO of Prometal Group, Hayssam El Jammal, mentioned the fire that broke out in one of Prometal’s factories last year, causing significant material damage, as one of the motivating factors for the Bassa special firefighters project. The CEO of Prometal Group added that he believes it is Prometal’s civic responsibility to successfully carry out projects of this magnitude because he believes that it is with the population that they can move forward.
