The North West Regional chairman of the Social Democratic Front (SDF) party, Fonguh Cletus Tanwie, has urged the incoming Regional Delegate of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) to guarantee the functionality of all polling stations.
This call was made during the installation of the new ELECAM boss for the North West Region. Mayor Fonguh emphasized the importance of ensuring that voters can easily access their designated polling stations to avoid low voter turnout as witnessed in previous elections.
The concept of polling centers was introduced during the 2018 presidential election and the 2020 legislative and municipal elections. ELECAM attributed the shift from polling stations to polling centers to the ongoing armed conflict in the North West and South West regions, which posed security risks to both voters and election officials.
Fonguh Cletus stressed the need for maximum security measures to be implemented, the elimination of illegal polling centers, and the maintenance of polling stations. He emphasized that polling centers are illegal and do not have any provisions in the electoral code.
These remarks were made during the installation ceremony of Mbowoh Elvis as the new ELECAM boss for the North West Region. Elvis will have a crucial role to play as Cameroon gears up for four major elections in the coming years.
Hailing from Lebialem in the South West Region, Elvis will be tasked with increasing voter registration ahead of the 2025 Presidential elections and the 2025 Municipal and Legislative elections.
In his new role, Elvis will need to work diligently to ensure that all polling stations are operational and accessible to voters, thus fostering a more inclusive and efficient electoral process in the region.
