According to the provisions of the constitution, the presidential election scheduled for 2025 should take place in about 17 months. Despite this seemingly distant date, the various political parties are already laying the groundwork for this presidential election, which promises to be unlike any other.

Unless a last-minute change occurs, Paul Biya, 91 years old and in power for 42 years, will be a candidate for his own succession in the 2025 presidential election. Neither he nor his party, the Rassemblement Démocratique du Peuple Camerounais, have openly announced it yet, but several signs already point to a certain candidacy by the man of November 6.

Yesterday, the civil cabinet of the presidency of the Republic released a documentary titled, “Paul Biya, a great statesman with a prodigious destiny.” The film, shown to all members of the government, highlights “the great achievements of the head of state, as well as his great and beautiful victories, but also the great trials endured and challenges faced by the man of November 6 and his people.” A true campaign move, according to several opinions.

Before the release of this documentary, several motions of support urging Paul Biya to run for another term were signed by his allies. His eldest son, Franck Biya, a member of the RDPC, had indeed stated without hesitation that “Paul Biya remains the natural candidate of his party, the RDPC.”

In the opposition camp, there is also a break from the lethargy. Even though the main opposition forces struggle to speak with one voice, they are not lacking in mobilization.

Honorable Jean Michel Nintcheu, a ousted deputy of the Social Democratic Front, has set up a coalition called the Political Alliance for Change (APC) around the candidate Maurice Kamto. Several parties have already joined this initiative, which remains open to other political formations.

On the other hand, Olivier Bille aims to bring the candidates together around the Alliance for Political Transition (ATP). This coalition has already received the preliminary agreement of major figures such as Cabral Libii, Akere Muna, and Joshua Osih.

Internally, the various parties are mobilizing, some to encourage registration on the electoral rolls, others to increase communication. Little by little, the time for big moves is approaching.
