Cameroon’s former Prime Minister, Philemon Yunji Yang, has received blessings from the Fon of Oku, his homeland, in Bui Division as he aspires to be President of the 79th UN General Assembly (UNGA).

In a statement released on Sunday, March 3, the Oku Palace extended its congratulations to Philemon Yang, a native son who is Africa’s representative for the prestigious UN job.

The Grand Chancellor of National Orders, Philemon Yang, was warmly welcomed at the Oku Palace by HRM Fon Ngum IV.

“It was an honor at the palace today to receive H.E. Philemon Yang, Africa’s candidate for the presidency of the 79th UN General Assembly. Congratulations once more, Your Excellency,” the palace wrote in a release.

This endorsement from the Oku Palace follows the Africa Union’s decision, during its 44th Executive Council meeting, to designate Philemon Yang, Cameroon’s former Ambassador to Canada, as Africa’s Candidate for the UNGA presidency.

This development occurred after the withdrawal of South Africa from the race.

The AU meeting, presided over by Commissioner Musa Faki Mahamat of Chad, solidified Yang’s position as the candidate to represent Africa in this significant international role.

The successful candidate for the UNGA presidency will preside over the Assembly’s affairs from September 2024 to September 2025.

If Philemon Yang secures the position, he will follow in the footsteps of the current UNGA President Dennis Francis from Trinidad.

Philemon Yang holds a remarkable place in Cameroonian history, serving as the country’s longest-serving Prime Minister and Head of Government.

His extensive diplomatic background includes over two decades as Cameroon’s Ambassador to Canada.
