A disciplinary procedure is underway against him; the Political Bureau requests President Cabral Libii’s authorization to open judicial proceedings against Robert Kona.

The tensions between Robert Kona and Cabral Libii are taking a new turn. The current president of the Cameroonian Party for National Reconciliation (PCRN), supported by most of the members, is working to consolidate his position as the party leader, which is being contested by the former president and founder. The series of events experienced at the end of last week suggests that the party’s Political Bureau intends to neutralize Robert Kona.

On March 12th, Cabral Libii convened a meeting of the extended Political Bureau. The body was to decide on the PCRN’s contributions to the formation of the Alliance for Political Transition. In response the next day, a document bearing Robert Kona’s signature was made public, stating that “Honorable Cabral Libii no longer has legitimacy since the suspension of the Kribi Congress for the PCRN.”

In turn, the current leadership of the political party clarified that Robert Kona lost his title as president during the Guidiguis Congress on May 11, 2019. Furthermore, neither the function of “founding president” nor that of “founder president” used in the document exists in the party’s statutes.

The Political Bureau held its meeting last Friday. The issue of political transition was discussed in detail. The meeting allowed participants to review the disciplinary proceedings opened against Robert Kona. The statement concluding the meeting indicates measures regarding the founder’s misconduct. The Political Bureau “requested the disciplinary committee to immediately and urgently initiate disciplinary proceedings against the former national president.”

Furthermore, “the national president was asked to authorize the initiation of legal proceedings before the ordinary courts” given the seriousness of the allegations against the founder. In late 2023, he brought a case to the Kaélé first instance court to annul the resolutions of the May 2019 congress. The case has not yet reached a conclusion. The hearing has been postponed several times due to the failure to present certain documents requested from Robert Kona. While the judiciary takes its time, deliberations continue within the party. The current focus is on removing the perceived disruptive element.
