Former reporter for Le Zenith newspaper, Elie Baho was captured in Eseka and then taken to the territorial gendarmerie group by the elements of this unit.

The heavy hand still hangs over journalists in Cameroon. This time it is journalist Elie Baho who is bearing the brunt. Based on a complaint allegedly filed by Cathy Meba, one of Paul Biya’s nieces, the journalist was arrested in Eseka according to our sources and forcefully taken to the territorial gendarmerie group. The journalist is being accused of defamation, according to our sources. In fact, on his Facebook page, the journalist wrote yesterday afternoon: “I am sorry for my mistake. I will make sure this never happens again. I sincerely apologize.” A statement that suggests that the former reporter for Le Zenith has admitted to the accusations against him, as confirmed by Cathy Meba, reached by MMF over the phone.

Although journalist Elie Baho does not have a good reputation among many of his colleagues, who accuse him of not working according to professional standards, his arrest raises several issues. The former Grand Reporter of Le Zénith newspaper was arrested in violation of all procedural rules: without a warrant according to his relatives. Worse, he was filmed during his interrogation. In a video circulating on social media, Elie Baho can be seen being interrogated in the office of Colonel Ayissi Nanga Parfait at the territorial gendarmerie group. A video that violates his rights and undermines his dignity. Our sources suggest that the video may have been filmed by Cathy Meba and circulated by her. When asked to respond to this, the regional councillor for the South denied the allegations. “I only know that he was apprehended and he admitted to the accusations and understands the gravity of his statements. But I don’t know what happened next,” she said.

Journalist Elie Baho had already announced a few months ago that he was facing threats. A few days later, it was reported that unidentified individuals had gone to the journalist’s neighborhood in Odza, Yaoundé looking for his home, but could not find it.

Between November 5 and 6, 2023, he also announced that a sergeant had contacted him by phone to arrange a meeting to discuss certain topics.

According to the testimonies of neighbors, on the morning of November 21 around 5:30 AM, the Semil (military security) elements were seen in two pickups in his neighborhood. “<>, a source revealed to whistleblower Paul Chouta.
