The 14th ordinary session of the North West Regional Assembly in Cameroon took place on Monday, April 10th, 2024. Themed “2023 Performance and Accounts Session,” the gathering aimed to reflect on past achievements, evaluate current progress, and plan strategically for the region’s future.
During his address to assembly members, Prof. Fru Angwafo, the President of the North West Regional Assembly, highlighted the importance of transparency, accountability, and efficiency in governance. This call to action came in response to the 2023 report from the Office of the Public Independent Conciliator, which exposed instances of wrongdoing among some councils. “As representatives entrusted with the well-being of our constituents, it is our duty to maintain the highest standards of integrity and stewardship,” Prof. Angwafo emphasized.
The session showcased accomplishments in various sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and cultural preservation. Infrastructure projects, especially road maintenance and rehabilitation, were completed to improve connectivity and market access for the region’s residents. In healthcare, the Regional Assembly made strides in expanding access to essential services, leading to improved health outcomes and a higher standard of living for the population.
According to Article 62 of the Cameroonian Constitution, the North West Regional Assembly was established by the President of Cameroon as a local governance institution. Its members consist of chiefs, politicians, and business elites. This special status was granted to the English-speaking North West and South West Regions following the Major National Dialogue (MND) in 2019, which aimed to address the Anglophone Crisis. However, questions still linger about the effectiveness of institutions like the Regional Assemblies, established for both regions, amidst the ongoing conflict.
Assembly members acknowledged the challenges faced in 2023, including security issues, socio-economic impacts, and the effects of climate change such as floods, storms, and environmental degradation. Prof. Fru Angwafo reiterated the importance of accountability and prudent financial management, highlighting the Assembly’s commitment to transparency through detailed accounts presentations and financial stewardship.
As discussions and strategic planning for the future progress, the focus remains on inclusivity, equity, and sustainable development. Priorities include capacity building initiatives, gender-based budgeting, and meeting the needs of vulnerable populations. Assembly members dedicate their time and efforts towards shaping a brighter future for the North West Region as the session unfolds.
