Muslims in Cameroon are eagerly anticipating the start of Ramadan fasting, which is set to begin next week as the National Moon Crescent Commission makes final observations.

In a recent statement, the Commission announced that Muslim faithful should be prepared to commence fasting on either Sunday, March 10, Monday, March 11, or Tuesday, March 12, depending on the sighting of the moon.

“The National Moon Crescent Commission is informing the Muslim Community of Cameroon that the search for the moon crescent to mark the beginning of the month of Ramadan will take place on Sunday, March 10, 2024,” the commission stated.

“If the lunar crescent is spotted on this date, the fast of Ramadan will commence, in Sha Allah, on March 11, 2024. Otherwise, the month of Shaaban will be completed in 30 days, and the fast will begin automatically,” it added.

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims engage in various forms of self-discipline, including refraining from drinking, eating, vomiting, and engaging in sexual activities between dusk and dawn. The fasting period can last for 29, 30, or a maximum of 31 days.

In preparation for the start of Ramadan, the Imam of the Buea Central Mosque, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, encouraged Muslims to embrace love, devotion, and peace during this sacred month, particularly amidst the ongoing conflicts in the country.

Fasting, which is the fourth pillar of Islam, follows the principles of belief in the oneness of Allah and his Messenger, Muhammed, alongside prayers, alms, and pilgrimage. The culmination of fasting is the joyous feast where Muslims express gratitude and praise to Allah.

As Muslims in Cameroon eagerly await the start of Ramadan, they are filled with anticipation and are ready to begin their period of fasting, prayer, and reflection in the upcoming weeks. The holy month of Ramadan holds great significance for followers of Islam, as it is a time for spiritual growth, self-discipline, and community solidarity.

The images included in the article show the preparations and celebrations that take place during Ramadan in Cameroon, highlighting the diversity and richness of Muslim culture in the country.
