Since the start of the 2023/2024 school year, 2,128 public secondary school teachers have been absent from their positions. The Minister of Secondary Education made public the list of these staff members in a communication dated February 29, 2024. In this document, Pauline Nalova Lyonga gives the concerned individuals two weeks to present at the headquarters of her ministry, documents that can justify their absence.

Among the required documents, the minister demands the presentation of the work post mapping, recent effective presence. In the absence of justification for their absence, the staff members are liable to the sanctions provided for in Article 94 of the General Statute of the Civil Service. These range from a warning to dismissal, through delays in promotion or even lowering of class or grade levels.

The production of this summary list comes one month after the list of teachers placed in a position of irregular absence and sanctioned. This other chapter of professional discipline concerns 2,326 teachers. They deserted their work positions to settle abroad, and continued to receive their salaries. As a sanction, the government proceeded to suspend their salaries. This action has brought back to the table the problem of the brain drain from Cameroon to other countries in Europe or America. This issue was addressed by the Head of State Paul Biya in his speech to the youth on February 10, 2024.
