During the recently concluded 2024 FENASSCO League A Games in Limbe, where various accolades were distributed to students, government officials, and dignitaries, Minister of Secondary Education, Professor Nalova Lyonga stood out by being the sole individual to decline the special prize presented to her by the organizing committee.
The incident took place at the Limbe Centenary Stadium on Tuesday, April 9, during the official closure of the 24th edition of the FENASSCO A Games, which began on Tuesday, April 2. “Let the prize be given to another person,” she declared. “MINESEC cannot organize the event, and I am not receiving the prize,” she further remarked.
Despite her refusal, the Regional Delegation of Secondary Education accepted the prize offered to them for their contributions in ensuring the smooth conduct of the games within the region.
Minister Nalova also chose not to deliver a prepared speech, opting instead to address the participants directly without using any written notes, even though a podium had been set up for her to deliver the speech.
“I don’t need to make a speech. We want to leave, and they have not given me mattresses,” she remarked. The mention of mattresses stemmed from her earlier threat that no buses would depart until the mattresses, which she claimed were stolen by students, were returned.
Efforts by MINESEC staff and the Secretary-General at the Ministry of Secondary Education to persuade her to read the prepared speech were unsuccessful.
During her impromptu address, Minister Nalova spoke candidly and unrehearsed, connecting with the audience. Her colleagues from various ministries, as well as regional and local authorities, were present during her address.
Minister Nalova’s actions at the FENASSCO A Games garnered attention for her principled stance and refusal of the special prize, setting her apart from the other award recipients at the event. Her decision to not deliver a prepared speech and to speak directly to the participants also showcased her authenticity and directness.
