Cameroon’s Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, RenĂ© Emmanuel Sadi, has dismissed calls for a political transition, maintaining that President Paul Biya’s leadership is stable and effective. This statement comes at a time when there is speculation about Biya’s potential candidacy in the 2025 presidential elections.
In an interview with Radio France International (RFI), Minister Sadi emphasized President Biya’s accomplishments and ongoing projects, attributing them to his four decades in power. Biya, who is currently 91 years old, has been the President of Cameroon since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
Sadi’s remarks were in response to claims made by former Secretary General at the Unity Palace, Titus Edzoa, who stated that individuals within the government had approached him to discuss the possibility of Biya stepping down from power. However, Sadi expressed doubts about Edzoa’s statements, asserting that any leadership changes will be determined by the Cameroonian population through democratic elections.
Regarding Biya’s potential candidacy in 2025, Sadi mentioned that the president typically announces his candidacy towards the end of his mandate, taking into consideration the views of his party, the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM). Members of the CPDM nationwide are in favor of President Biya standing for reelection in 2025, as they believe in his leadership.
Addressing the speculation around Biya’s son, Franck Biya, Sadi indicated that his eligibility and decision to run for office will be made responsibly. Sadi also defended Biya’s continued leadership by highlighting his experience in governance as a strong reason for ongoing support.
However, there have been concerns raised about the treatment of former government officials who have left Biya’s administration, many of whom have faced legal challenges. Sadi insisted that these individuals were fairly judged for common offenses and not politically motivated crimes, emphasizing that there are no political prisoners in Cameroon.
Sadi’s comments shed light on the political landscape in Cameroon as the country prepares for the 2025 presidential elections. Despite calls for change and speculation about Biya’s potential candidacy, the government remains steadfast in its support for President Biya’s leadership.
