Several members of the joint border patrol forces of Nigeria and Cameroon were reportedly killed in an attack by a pro-Biafra separatist group on Sunday.

The attack was allegedly carried out by the Black Marines, a militant group loyal to the Biafra Nations League, a Nigerian separatist group claiming the Bakassi Peninsula ceded to Cameroon.

According to Nigeria-based television Sunrise Daily TV, the attack resulted in the deaths of at least 17 members of the Joint Border Patrol forces. However, these claims could not be independently verified and there have been no official statements from Cameroonian and Nigerian authorities.

The attack took place near the Nigerian border village of Ugenghe in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The border forces were reportedly guarding oil installations and workers near the maritime border.

The Bakassi Peninsula has been vulnerable to attacks from Biafra militants and Ambazonia separatists for several years. This oil-rich peninsula, to which Cameroon and Nigeria have strong ties, was ceded to Cameroon in 2002 after a longstanding dispute. Nonetheless, Nigerian non-state armed groups continue to launch attacks on the area, which has remained largely impoverished and underdeveloped.
