The former mayor implicated in the Martinez Zogo assassination case was dismissed from his duties on Friday, April 5, 2024.

The municipal executive of the commune of Bibey, located in the Haute Sanaga department, in the central region, now has a new mayor. Municipal councilor Dagobert Avom Abega, a local elected official of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, who served as the deputy mayor, has replaced his party comrade at the helm of the commune. He will temporarily exercise the functions of mayor, pending the outcome of Martin Stéphane Savom’s case before the Yaoundé military tribunal.

Mayor of Bibey since 2015, Martin Savom is one of the 17 accused individuals brought before the judges of the Yaoundé military tribunal on March 25. They are being prosecuted in relation to the assassination of the head of Radio Amplitude FM between January 17 and 22, 2023. According to the referral order of investigating judge Pierrot Narcisse Nzie, Martin Savom was “an accomplice to crimes of arrest and kidnapping, torture, and murder committed by Danwe Justin and his collaborators, particularly by inciting and assisting, by providing the means, in the commission of these crimes.” He is therefore being prosecuted for “complicity in murder and complicity in torture.”

As part of this case, Martin Savom has been incarcerated since December 19, 2023, at the main prison of Kondengui in Yaoundé. This incarceration and the continuation of the trial make him unavailable to carry out his duties as mayor. Faced with this breach, the Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, Georges Elanga Obam, instructed the prefect of the Haute Sanaga to convene a session of the municipal council to replace the mayor. Prefect Gilbert Nanga Dang convened this meeting on April 5. At the end of the proceedings, Dagobert Avom Abega will now assume the functions of mayor until the next municipal elections scheduled for February 2025.
