The outgoing president of the lower house of the Cameroonian Parliament resurfaces after a period of absence, raising questions.
The head of the upper house of Parliament, Marcel Niat Njifenji, has returned to Yaoundé according to our colleagues at DW. According to this newspaper, the senator appointed three times by the head of state and elected president of the Senate 10 times in a row, is coming back at a crucial moment as the parliamentary session opened in the Senate on March 5th at 4 pm, is heading towards a decisive point: the renewal of the Chamber’s bureau and general committees. His return, which still needs confirmation, tends to give weight to the hypothesis that he could still be maintained as the head of the Senate’s bureau.
However, from the opening of the session nine days ago, the absence of Marcel Niat Njifenji, president of the Senate since taking office in 2013, was noticeable. Especially since even before March 5th, people were already questioning the silence and disappearance from the scene of the second personality of the Republic since the end of the budget session on December 9, 2023. In this series of questions, only one answer could prevail. That the health condition of Eric Niat’s father, mayor of Bangangté, who will soon celebrate his 90th birthday, requires diligent care.
Based on these elements, some believe that Marcel Niat Njifenji may not be elected president of the Senate in the upcoming vote. However, the silence within the Democratic Rally of the Cameroonian People (Rdpc) does not indicate any urgency for a readjustment of the established order in the Senate during the full-fledged session opened on April 11, 2023. Everything so far suggests that the system could once again opt for continuity.
