There was chaos in the Ndongo neighborhood of Buea, South West Region of Cameroon, this evening as residents searched for a man accused of raping an underage girl.
The accused managed to escape before the crowd arrived at his hostel room, leading to the lynching of his roommate.
After a heated interrogation by the residents, the roommate was taken to the police station for further investigations.
The main suspect disappeared after the young girl brought people to the place where she was allegedly assaulted.
The distressed state of the victim with evident signs of sexual assault led concerned residents to her. She then led the crowd to the room where the assault took place, even pointing out the bedsheet used during the crime.
Reacting quickly, the angry mob apprehended the accused individual’s roommate, escalating an already volatile situation.
This incident occurs amid a nationwide outcry against rape and sexual predation as authorities try to uncover a network of serial rapists accused of assault over 1,000 girls and women.
Influential businessman, Herve Bopda, who is currently in custody, is suspected of leading the alleged network of sexual predators, which spans from Yaoundé to Douala.
There has been a widespread campaign for justice, not only for the alleged victims of Herve Bopda, but for all victims of sexual assault in Cameroon.
Cameronian activist and politician Edith Kah Walla tweeted, “Cameroonians and especially Cameroonian women are not safe anywhere. In conflict zones we rape. In the city there is rape. The results of 41 years of the Biya Regime. All our hashtags are STOP.”
Rape and sexual assault against women and girls is frequent in Cameroon due to armed conflicts, poverty, and inadequate protection mechanisms for victims.
