The approach of deputy Jean Michel Nintcheu worries several opposition leaders. This is because, gathered around a force called the Political Alliance for Change (APC), the defector from the Social Democratic Front has continuously called on other opposition leaders to rally behind Maurice Kamto, the candidate for the Cameroonian Renaissance Movement.
After openly calling for the opposition to unite behind Maurice Kamto at the last congress of the MRC, Honorable Jean Michel Nintcheu approached several politicians, including Cabral Libii, in order to officially invite them to this coalition, which he claims is led by the APC. According to him, this platform is made up of political parties, civil society actors, intellectuals, etc.
While Cabral Libii had not yet responded to this invitation, Honorable Jean Michel Nintcheu believed that the former was opposed to the coalition proposed by the APC. In a statement signed at the end of January, the former SDF deputy wrote: “The Political Alliance For Change (APC) learned on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 through a statement by Honorable Cabral Libii Li Ngue, National President of the PCRN, on social media, that opposition political parties had created a Transition Coalition which will publish a document on the Mutualized Political Offer of Transition (DOPMT), then choose its candidate for the next presidential election in 2025. The APC deduces that this publication by Honorable Cabral LIBII is in fact a response to the invitation addressed to him at the beginning of January by the APC, which he published on social media, but has not, to date, deigned to respond, much less in the same form as the invitation sent to his party,” he said. And he continued: “The APC takes note. And calls on its supporters, members of allied parties and organizations, religious and traditional leaders, academics, intellectuals, women and men of culture, and the People for Change to remain focused on the only objective worthy of being, namely the victory of their candidate, Professor Maurice KAMTO, in 2025 or before.”
This statement followed an announcement made a few days ago by Cabral Libii after a meeting with another opposition platform. “I have had a long discussion today with Dr. Olivier BILE regarding his initiative for an Alliance for Political Transition (ATP). I have received the relevant document. Together we will continue to deepen the reflection, gather opinions and involve other leaders and political organizations and civil society for an effective political consolidation in Cameroon,” wrote Cabral Libii.
When asked about the idea of a single candidacy proposed by Jean Michel Nintcheu, Honorable Koupit Adamaou, UDC deputy, believes that “the approach of Honorable Nintcheu is a stumbling approach.” In turn, Cabral Libii, who has always claimed to be in favor of a single opposition candidacy, believes that the opposition should hold primaries to vote for its candidate. An idea that Maurice Kamto has always rejected.
If some opposition parties oppose the idea proposed by Jean Michel Nintcheu, it is because they believe that the APC is a nebulous entity. “We don’t know how this platform was born. We don’t see the real forces behind it. We don’t see how Maurice Kamto was appointed. We are only told to unite behind his candidacy,” denounces a member of the SDF. “We are being forced a project, all behind Kamto. Logically, if the PCRN, the SDF, the UDC, the UNDP, the UPC are not part of this nebulous entity, who exactly is hiding behind it?” asked another PCRN activist.
