The former national coordinator of the Progressive Movement, who resigned in favor of the ruling CPDM in 2020, surprises public opinion with his U-turn.
Jean Jacques Ekindi calls on Progressive Movement activists to the 5th extraordinary convention on April 27, 2024. The former general coordinator of the opposition party includes several items on the agenda for this meeting. These include acknowledging his resignation as general coordinator, noting the vacancy of the Executive Committee, and electing a new general coordinator. The statement specifies that the convention will be held in the city of Douala.
The party’s founder made this announcement four years after his resignation from the Progressive Movement in favor of the CPDM. On April 30, 2020, Jean Jacques Ekindi made the decision to leave his movement. He, who had been a fierce opponent of President Paul Biya for several decades, earning the nickname “lion hunter”, switched sides on the eve of the presidential election on October 7, 2018. He expressed his support for candidate Paul Biya, considering him the best among the 9 candidates in the race.
His resignation from the PM has led to the loss of members of this political party over the past four years. Additionally, with this resignation, the former deputy lost his position as general coordinator of the party. The interim is now being handled by Hilaire Zipang. The lion hunter has thus lost the power to act as president of the party, even though he retains his status as the founder of the political formation. Nevertheless, by resigning in April 2020, he made it known that he would continue to manage the current affairs until the next convention. His return to the management of the PM comes a few months before the elections, a time marked by negotiations within political parties and alliances between politicians.
