The recent statements made by former national team coach, Hugo Bross, have brought to light the growing tensions between the former iconic captain of the Cameroonian team, Samuel Eto’o, and the Ministry of Sports. These tensions reached a critical level following the team’s disappointing results in the last African Cup.
According to Bross, the Ministry had overstepped its boundaries by directly involving itself in the selection of the national team coach, a decision that should have been under the jurisdiction of the federation. This situation understandably angered Eto’o, whose opposition to this ministerial interference is understandable.
It is clear that these disagreements did not create a good start for Brys, the new national team coach, according to his compatriot Hugo Bross. Furthermore, the context in which he operates is not the easiest. Indeed, the champion of Africa in 2017 asserts that “Cameroon has no less than 23 million ‘coaches’ who each have their own opinion on the national team’s performance.”
The pressure on the team is also emphasized by Bross, who mentions the minister of Sports’ morning interventions before each match, demanding victory. “This constant pressure only accentuates the burden on the players’ shoulders,” he points out.
“In any case, this is not a good start for Brys. And in any case, the work is not easy there,” he added.
For now, Marc Brys and his staff are engaged in a national tour to visit Cameroon’s sports facilities. They hope to meet with the president of Fecafoot soon in order to improve the atmosphere that has deteriorated within the Cameroonian football family.
