The Promoter of the Movement 10 Million Northerners and Publisher of L’oeil du Sahel Says He Does Not Work to Fulfill a Personal Ambition.

According to the newspaper Infomatin in its publication of March 11, 2024, Guibaï Gatama is preparing to be a candidate in the 2025 presidential election in Cameroon. The promoter of the Movement 10 Million Northerners is said to be among those who would like to receive the blessing of the people to govern Cameroon in the coming years.

Reading this newspaper, opposition leader Cabral Libii, who was the declared 3rd candidate in the 2018 presidential election, encouraged the potential candidate. “I strongly encourage citizen Guibaï. It is God who gives power through the sovereign people. Let nothing and no one stop him. Whether alone or leading a collective effort, it is up to him to decide. Especially, let those who believe in him register massively on the electoral lists,” the deputy wrote on his Facebook page.

Almost at the same time, Guibaï Gatama made a statement that could be seen as a clarification. “Me, a candidate? You can never say never… But my commitment to reach the fresh grass of Etoudi’s green pastures is not intended to fulfill a personal ambition. Let us remain mobilized so that the Grand North, in a democratic and republican spirit, takes its place on the national political stage,” he wrote.

As a journalist and political activist, he is known as the spokesperson for the northern regions. He defends the interests of Adamaoua, the North, and the Far North, regions whose people he would like to see take back control of the country’s affairs as it was before the resignation of President Ahmadou Ahidjo on November 4, 1982, and the arrival of President Paul Biya on November 6, 1982.

In this perspective, Guibaï Gatama runs his regional tri-weekly newspaper and leads the platform 10 Million Northerners. This group, considered a pressure group, has been working since its officialization on July 27, 2020. It formulates demands related to regional balance, especially in the recruitment of young people into top schools or the civil service. The 10 million refers to the population of the Grand North with at least 2.5 million voters out of the 7.5 million on the national electoral register. A political force that he continues to mobilize.

In recent years, he has been involved in the renewal of the electoral register, urging citizens from the Grand North to register on the electoral lists. It is not surprising that an article focuses on his political ambitions at a time when behind-the-scenes negotiations for the presidential election are taking place.
