As Cameroon faces the challenge of a rising cost of living, the government is taking steps to help ease the financial burden on its citizens by offering food at discounted prices through promotional sales.

The Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Atanga, announced in a press release on Monday, March 18, that the government will be selling certain food items at very affordable prices to the public.

According to the release, the Minister of Trade stated that in response to the increasing prices of food products internationally and inflationary pressures, the government is conducting promotional sales operations for mass-consumption food items across the country. These operations are being carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Commerce.

Residents of Yaounde are being encouraged to take advantage of these promotional sales at various designated locations, including the May 20 Boulevard, Carrefour MEEC, and the Esplanade.

The Minister highlighted that these sales will allow consumers to purchase goods directly from producers, importers, or manufacturers at reduced prices, eliminating the need for intermediaries.

These promotional sales coincide with the Ramadan period and the Easter holidays, and will continue until April 16, 2024. One of the products being sold at discounted prices is beef, with boneless meat priced at FCFA 2,500/kg and meat on the bone priced at FCFA 2,000/kg.

Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, the Minister of Trade, encourages consumers to take advantage of this opportunity to save on their food expenses.

This initiative comes in response to the ongoing surge in food prices in the country, driven by overall inflation. In February, the government announced the second increase in petrol and diesel prices within a year, leading to higher transportation costs and the prices of essential goods.
